Reducing Dental AnxietyThe idea that dentists are scary is one played on by media of all types and is passed down from generation to generation. But that stigma doesn’t have to exist. Reducing dental anxiety in your children–and yourself–is quite doable. Still, it might still take some effort on your part. Below are some tips for reducing dental anxiety to help make your trips to the dentist more enjoyable.

Discuss Your Concerns

Discussing your concerns with your dentist will allow your dentist to have an open conversation with you. Doing so can help allay any fears you may have. Your dentist doesn’t want you to feel uncomfortable, and will walk you through the process and answer any questions you may have. If it’s your child that’s worried about the dentist visit, having the three of you talk about what will happen before getting started can help calm and relax young minds as well.

Find Distractions

While it can be hard to focus on other things as your appointment approaches, doing so can help calm you down. Some ideas you could try are to wear headphones and listen to music both before and during your appointment. Audiobooks are an excellent way to lose yourself in the story so you’re not focusing on what’s happening outside of it. You may find other distractions that better suit your preferences, such as thinking about your happy place, singing songs in your head, or other devices to keep your mind off of things.

Breathe

Take a deep breath. Breathe in, breathe out. When nervous, many people tend to hold their breath, which reduces the oxygen levels in their body and can further increase stress and panic. Instead, try focusing on your breathing. Focus on slow, relaxed breathing to help calm yourself.

These are just a few ways of reducing dental anxiety. As everyone is different, you may have found other ways to effectively reduce your stress and anxiety. Remember what works and go in with a plan. You might be surprised at how much better your dentist’s appointment can be when your stress levels are managed.
